About Dr. Gustke
Dr. Gustke has been practicing orthopedic surgery specializing in knee and hip arthritis surgery in Tampa for 43 years. He is a founding member and past President of the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. He received his medical education at Wayne State University and completed his orthopedic residency at Henry Ford Hospital, both in Detroit. Dr. Gustke received additional training in hip and knee joint replacement surgery at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston and a fellowship in adult hip and knee reconstruction and arthritis surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Gustke is renowned on the national and international level for his pioneering efforts in knee and hip replacement implant design. He is the co-designer of eight total hip replacement implants and a complete total knee replacement system which includes four different types of implants. He holds three patents on hip replacement design. His implants have been implanted by other surgeons in hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide. Dr. Gustke has been a primary developer and early utilizer of muscle sparing minimally invasive knee and hip replacement surgical techniques. He was a co-designer of a computer navigation system that has been in use for almost twenty years and the lead designer of the world’s current leading robotic total knee technology.
He has published over 120 journal articles, textbook chapters, abstracts, and technical monographs. He has lectured at more than 600 local, national, and international orthopedic surgery forums. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at USF College of Medicine. He was a founding member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and is a member of The Knee Society, a closed group of 109 members representing the very best academic and practicing knee replacement surgeons in the world.
