About Dr. Lyons
Joint replacement surgeon
Dr. Lyons is specialty trained in Adult Reconstruction. He completed a fellowship in joint replacement at the University of Utah. As a joint replacement surgeon, he has treated patients in the Tampa Bay area for over 25 years and has served on the Florida Orthopedic Institutes’ board of directors for the last 15 years. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee surgeons and has served on the board of the Florida Orthopaedic Society for 11 years and was the past president of that organization presiding in 2019-2020.
Dr. Steven T. Lyons is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and currently serves on that board as an oral examiner.
Dr. Lyons currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of South Florida and has mentored many fellows in the FOI adult reconstruction fellowship program for over 20 years. He has been involved in the development of both hip and knee implants over his career and currently is a co-designer of one of the most popular knee replacement designs globally, with Zimmer Biomet. He is also a co-designer of Zimmer Biomet’s revision knee system that has impactfully changed revision knee surgery for the better.
Dr. Lyons has given numerous oral presentations and has instructed in many teaching conferences, labs, and live surgeries over the years. He continues to be actively involved in research, publishing yearly in orthopaedic journals, and serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Arthroplasty. Dr. Lyons has been consistently named as one of the best orthopaedic doctors by various peer reviewed and web-based Physician rating companies. Dr. Lyons has been chosen as a member of “Who’s Who in Orthopaedics”, “The Best Doctors in America” by U.S. News and World Report and has been featured in Tampa Bay Metro Magazine and Tampa Style magazine.
Doctor Lyons loves exotic cars and is an avid F1 racing enthusiast. In his spare time, he enjoys spending it with his wife and their two dogs, Simi, and Enzo.

The PA, Ethan, was excellent. I know that Dr. Lyons is a teaching doctor since I have had his fellows in the past for follow-up visits. Diagnosis was bursitis. Had injection which started making my hip begin to feel better within one day. PT was recommended. Had my first appt today.

I've been around for a long time. (84yrs) I watched medical practices go from your family doctor who knew you, your children, and your grandchildren to what it is today. Today's environment is the "Mega Practices" where you're just a number! Not so with Dr Lyons and Florida Orthopedic. I had heard many horror stories about getting a knee replacement, and the orientation was stressful, but necessary. Dr. Lyons and his staff made the operation flawless and for eight years I have had no problems. I just had my annual check up and he and I were very With the results and how everything is going to date.I highly, highly recommend Dr. Lyons for the replacements and type of work he does. I went to Dr. Lyons because of severe pain in my hip and back to where I was in a wheel chair more often than not. I traveled 3 hours to Tampa to have him do my surgery because he took the time to listen to my concerns and to explain all I needed to know about the procedure . It is now one month after my hip replacement surgery with Dr. Lyons and I have zero pain in my hip and I'm walking normally without any assistance , walker or cane . This surgery has been life changing and I highly recommend Dr. Lyons and his thoughtful and proficient staff . I have found Dr. Lyons a very caring and patient doctor. He explains what he sees on the x ray and then he explains your options. Today I received a booster shot of cortisone which I’m hoping to hold off a replacement! When we first met him he seemed very serious but after doing quite a few visits we found out not only does he know what he is doing he does have a great sense of humor! Feel very safe in his care and found out he does fantastic surgery —he did my husband’s knee replacement! He is the “go to” surgeon for knees—hubby had excellent results ! I recently saw Dr. Lyons at FOI for pain I have in my knee. I must say from the moment I entered the building till I left I was treated with the most upmost respect and well taken care of. Jeannette, Millie and Candice help me with everything before I met with the doctor. All three ladies were very knowledgeable and respectful. I have know Dr Lyons now for 20 years, he replaced my right knee 20 years ago and just recently he had to do a revision on a bad knee replacement done by another Orthopedic Surgeon. It was great to meet Dr. Lyons. His secretary/medical assistant is so very efficient. I met a young doctor by the name of Dr. Johnson, a fellow. He explained a lot of what I needed to know and answered my questions. I'm pretty sure that I spent more time with him than Dr. Lyons. When I left the office it was all kind of a blur. There is a lot of information to take in. A friend of mine had a fairly complicated knee replacement last year. She highly recommended Dr. Lyons. Just last week, I saw an old friend quite unexpectedly. Remembering that she had a replacement we talked about her experience. I was surprised to learn that Dr. Lyons also did her surgery and she will have the other knee done the first of next year. Her leg is now straight which definitely was not before surgery. This is the Orthopedic Surgeon you can highly trust whether you’re having a knee replacement or a knee revision, 20 years ago he replied my right knee and the gear I’d still holding out, so last year when I had my left knee replaced by Dr Burke in Largo who put it in so badly, I thought about Dr Lyons to do the revision and I’m glad I did, he really cares about his patients and listens to yours needs. Dr Burke is an arrogant Buffoon who never exams or even gets near the knee, even though ; I knew something was wrong he answer was it’s fine and there’s nothing wrong with my knee, at one point my knee was getting worse and my primary care doctor took a ct-scan of my knee and I took it to Dr Burke and he literally flung back at me. So I went to Dr Lyons for a second opinion who took an X-ray of my knees and showed me that my left knee replacement was put it crooked. Dr. Lyons in my opinion is the elite in his field, and I fought hard to get back to him to make sure I had the same success with my left knee replacement that I had with my right one. Knee was aching from time to time after total knee replacement in 2016 by Dr. Lyons. X-ray showed everything normal and working as it should. Dr. Lyons suggested an X-ray of hip since I been scuba diving for a lifetime and there may be damage from the high uptake on nitrogen during dives. X-rays showed that hips were in perfect order. Dr. Lyons performed a partial meniscectomy on my right knee in June. Prior to surgery he thoroughly explained the pros and cons of differing treatments, and was extremely kind and patient with my many questions. I found his staff to be the same. Florida Orthopedic Institute has very high standards for those who do the work for the patients whom they serve.. The lady who sees you to your room is there to help you get everything ready when visiting the doctor. She is always on top of things. Very efficient, professional medical treatment. Online preregistration is simple. I showed up 10 minutes before my scheduled appointment. Strict Covid protocol was followed. Dr. Lyons and his wonderful staff are all extremely attentive to the patients needs at all times. From the first appointment with Dr. Lyons to discuss a knee replacement, I knew that I was in the right place with the right doctor. He was kind and understanding of the 4 previous knee surgeries to remove cartilage and meniscus, plus a few shots of synthetic knee lubricant to help the “bone on bone” situation. He totally explained the replacement procedure in infinite detail. After surgery I rapidly recovered at PT. Swimming in my pool in just over 2 weeks. My name is Alfonso Abreu and I had a right hip total replacement on 08/07/19. There is only 17 days and I'm in a very good recovery process. I moved very fast from walker to cane and from cane to not using anything to walk and to do my physical therapy. We found him to be very professional, knowledgeable and at the top of his field, especially in doing revision surgeries.
