Doctor Profile: Evan M. Loewy, MD

Dr. Loewy: My name is Evan Loewy and I’m an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon with Florida Orthopaedic Institute. My favorite thing about foot and ankle surgery is that you get to see patients from a variety of different backgrounds and a variety of different conditions and get to know them and not only figure out what their problem is but what they’re hoping to gain out of the care. And then using both conservative and operative treatments to help them get back to their way of life. We take care of a lot of different problems from acute and chronic. Everything from ankle arthritis, tendon injuries, acute fractures or trauma all the way to bunions and hammertoes. It’s important to me to get to know the patient so that I can figure out not only what their problem is but also what they’re trying to gain out of the care so that we can work together to form a plan of care using both operative and non-operative treatment.

Florida Orthopaedic Institute offers a very unique opportunity for me to come back to the area that I was born and raised and also did a lot of my training and to provide care to my patients while interacting with residents and being a part of training and research in addition to patient care. So when I’m not taking care of patients I love to spend time with my wife and two kids. Also, I really enjoy offshore fishing and following college and professional sports. One of my favorite conditions to treat is ankle arthritis and this really highlights one of the things that I enjoy is getting to know the patient and seeing what they want to get back to in addition to what their problem is. And it provides very unique situation because on average ankle arthritis patients are 10 years younger than hip and knee arthritis patients, and over two-thirds of them will present with an accompanying problem with their foot or ankle in addition to the arthritis. And so these combinations of things leads to a very unique situation for patients. And that offers exciting challenges and how to take care of them in the best way possible. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with residents and fellows and on the education side of things as well as continuing my research specifically in ankle arthritis and Lower Extremity Trauma. I’m excited to join Florida Orthopaedic Institute in their pursuit of continuing to provide the best possible care to the Tampa Bay community.
