Dr. Profile: Thomas Auld, MD
Dr. Auld: Hi, my name is Thomas Auld. I’m a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty training in hip and knee replacement surgery. I’m originally from Florida and did my undergraduate and medical school training in Florida. I subsequently went on to complete a residency in orthopedic surgery at Rutgers in New Jersey and a fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery at Johns Hopkins University.
The most common condition that I treat is osteoarthritis of the joint, which generally refers to the wear and tear of the joint over time. But a number of conditions can cause arthritis in a hip or a knee. Typically, we treat arthritis with conservative or surgical treatment. Surgical treatment consists of a total joint replacement and when appropriate, partial joint replacement.
When patients show up in office, after performing a history and physical, we generally obtain x-rays. Based on the x-rays, we can determine the severity of their arthritis and based on that, come up with a treatment plan for them. Generally, we start with conservative treatments, which may entail medications and physical therapy, and sometimes injections. Oftentimes, when these don’t work, the last step is to consider surgery.
What I like best about hip and knee replacement surgery is it allows me the opportunity to provide direct and quick impact on a patient’s life. Patients may go from a state of debilitating pain and difficulty walking to a pain-free lifestyle and being more active.
Florida Orthopaedic Institute is a well-run multidisciplinary group that specializes in orthopedic treatment. Whether patients come in for neck pain to foot and ankle pain, you know that when patients schedule an appointment with us that they’ll receive the best quality of care.
