NAVIO Surgical System: Dr. Miranda
Hi, my name’s Michael Miranda. I’m an arthroplasty surgeon at Florida Orthopaedic Institute. My specialty is adult reconstruction. I do 4 to 500 hip and knee replacements a year. One of the advanced techniques that I’ve been working with is the robotic surgery, specifically the Navio instrumentation, which is robotic surgery to assist with a robotic-assisted procedure. The way that this procedure occurs is the patient is seen in the office. They have a standard x-ray. They’re indicated for a partial knee replacement to have arthritis of one identified compartment in their knee. They failed conservative treatment and we indicate them for surgery. When we’re preparing for a lot of procedure, we have an instrument here that’s called a pointer, which essentially maps the morphology of the bone of the femur and the tibia. We are able to develop so to say a map of where the components will be implanted into the patient’s needs after the map has been created.
When it’s time for bone resection, we use the robotic bur which runs off of retraction system and a foot pedal and I control the bur. And when the bur is in the incorrect position too far to the right, too far to the left or too deep, the bur will actually retract, thus preventing an overresection of a patient’s bone. The benefit of this is that this allows for exact precision and accuracy for the preparation of the bone with implants in place. With the use of robotics and a hand piece such as this, you’re allowed to do more minimally invasive procedures, smaller incisions, less muscle cutting tissue, cutting, more of a muscle sparing approach to the surgery. This allows for patients to recover quicker, have less pain, and return to their normal function at a quicker rate. Currently, with use of robotics and Navio system, we can do partial knee replacements including medial compartment replacement, lateral compartment replacement, tell terminal joint at Florida Orthopaedic Institute. We are the first surgery center to have a NAVIO robot in the state of Florida, and our facility specializes in outpatient procedures, and we’re one of the only centers in the Southeastern United States to perform outpatient robotic procedures.
