About Dr. Palumbo

Dr. Palumbo is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship trained in adult reconstructive surgery. His focus is on diagnosing and treating hip and knee arthritis and its effects. Dr. Palumbo specializes in hip and knee joint replacements and has expertise in managing failed and infected joint replacements. He performs hip replacements primarily through a direct anterior approach and has a unique passion for partial knee arthroplasty. Additionally, Dr. Palumbo treats hip abductor tears and performs gluteus medius repairs as well as gluteus maximus muscle transfers. 

Dr. Palumbo served in the Special Operations Command of the United States Air Force as a jet mechanic from 1997 to 2001. He completed his undergraduate, medical degree and Orthopaedic residency at the University of South Florida. He then attended the prestigious Harvard/Brigham and Women’s adult reconstruction fellowship and subsequently returned to Tampa to join the Florida Orthopaedic Institute where he’s been practicing for the past 10 years. 

Dr. Palumbo has authored nearly 30 peer reviewed articles and has delivered 15 lectures for professional organizations such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Southern Orthopaedic Association, and Florida Orthopaedic Society. He is a professor at the USF Orthopaedic Residency program and a full-time faculty member for the FOI adult reconstruction fellowship. Dr. Palumbo has helped to design 3 different knee implants and has several implant patents. He is an active member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. 

Dr. Palumbo has a tremendous passion for international and local mission work. He partnered with Pioneer Medical Foundation in 2020 to start a free, quarterly Orthopaedic clinic for the underserved. Additionally, he has personally performed, participated in, or organized over 130 total joint replacements nationally or internationally. Dr. Palumbo’s personal interests include clinical and basic science research, implant design, personal fitness, and, most of all, spending time with his family.
