About Dr. Kumar
Dr. Kumar received his undergraduate degree at Lehigh University and his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Drexel University, where he served as chief resident. He then completed an Adult and Pediatric Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Connecticut and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
Dr. Neil S. Kumar is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Kumar has been widely published in several major sports medicine journals and presented at several orthopedic surgical conferences. He is also a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr. Kumar cares for all conditions related to sports medicine, including tendon, muscle, and ligament injuries. His special interests include arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery, knee ligament repair and reconstruction, cartilage restoration and shoulder instability.
Dr. Kumar is passionate about his practice of medicine. He believes patient education and understanding of diagnosis and treatment options are extremely important. Dr. Kumar believes in working as a team with other caregivers and the patient to get them feeling better and back to work and activities as soon as possible.
In his spare time, Dr. Kumar enjoys spending time with his wife, Bhumi, and their two children, Niam and Ava.

Dr Kumar is an excellent physician! I recently had a second hip surgery on opposite hip. He is pleasant, explains procedures thoroughly, has a great sense of humor, listens to my concerns and is open and encouraging to my questions. My daughter has seen Dr. Kumar twice for a sports injury to both knees. We went back to him a second time after we received stellar treatment the first go around. He is an amazing doctor from his medical knowledge to his interactions with both my self but most importantly my daughter. He is most concerned about his patients health and well being above all things and does not rush a player back to the sport regardless of what others want or recommend. I recently had a car accident and was referred to Dr. Kumar by the ER to follow up with my broken arm. The staff was very welcoming, friendly and super helpful. After my half cast, that was placed on me in the ER, was removed I almost fainted from the pain in my arm. The doctor and at least 4 other nurses quickly, jumped into action, and made sure I was OK. The care shown to me was amazing. For my arm, I was placed in a movable brace instead of a hard cast, which is amazing! I will begin PT in a few weeks. I was so scared to be placed in a full arm cast since I have such a busy life. They were so patient & sympathetic & I didn't feel rushed or like I was a burden or dramatic. Although I am definitely not an expert on medical proficiency, my experience with Dr. Kumar for my meniscus tear and subsequent partial menisectomy has been excellent. Prior to the surgery, Dr. Kumar took extra time to explain the procedure, the reasoning for the procedure and comparisons to alternatives. This made me very comfortable with the surgery and positive outcome. Within days of the surgery I had full range of motion and will be back on the sand (beach volleyball) very soon! Dr. Kumar was incredible! He took the time to show me my scans and explain everything to me. He took his time evaluating me as well to make sure the scans were correct. The first doctor I saw misdiagnosed me with a break and told me I would need surgery. Kumar took his time to realize that was not the case and with some Physical Therapy I will back to normal. I tore my ACL back in November and was previously seeing Dr. Guttentag to treat it. I was sent to physical therapy with ibuprofen and given an ACL brace. After my month follow up, I expressed concerns of continued pain even with physical therapy and I didn’t feel like anything was getting better. He belittled me and offered no other options expect for physical therapy and ibuprofen. After a few months of this vicious cycle, I had become very frustrated and expressed these frustrations to my wonderful physical therapist who referred me to Dr. Kumar. This was the best decision I have ever made. I had an appointment with his PA Rachel who was absolutely wonderful and walked me through the MRI results and explained everything to me. By the end of the appointment I was scheduled for surgery in less than a month and was given direct contact information for any questions I had. Rachel and Dr. Kumar listened to my concerns and gave me solutions as well as options. They talked to me like a person and validated all of the feelings and concerns I had. I just got home from my post-op appointment and even though it sucks and the road to recovery is very long, I would still choose them. I have felt supported and safe throughout the entire process. I can’t speak for everyone, but my experience with Dr. Kumar was one of the best by far and I would recommend him and his staff to anyone and everyone I know! I can’t say enough great things about my experience with Dr. Kumar. I’m an active duty military officer of 27 years. I have pushed my body in training and in service for years. My recent knee problems were too much to work through so I met and discussed options with him. First of all I was pleased to discuss my continued activity first and foremost. Wow, what can I say! Dr. Kumar and Rachel (PA) operated on my left rotator cuff and bicep in August 2021. Before my surgery and after, I was provided with great care and communication throughout my months of recovery. Dr. Kumar and his physical therapy team has given me back what I lost since my surgery and now I have great mobility and strength and have received clearance to return to the gym. My recent rotator cuff surgery (June 2020) could not have gone better—Dr Kumar is an excellent ortho doc who is completely professional, thorough and caring. After 5 months post-surgery (including 8 weeks of physical therapy) I have full range of movement with NO pain. I recommend Dr. Neil Kumar very highly. A year ago I had pain in my shoulder. After a bad experience with another doctor, I saw Dr. Kumar who gave me a very thorough exam. He was easy to talk with and explained things very well. Turns out I had tears in my rotator cuff. Even though I was 69 years old, I wanted it fixed so I could live many more years with full use of my shoulder without pain. So Dr. Kumar performed the operation to repair my rotator cuff. I was prepared as it took a significant heal period. Pain the first few weeks was helped with meds and an ice machine. Three months in a sling, six months of rehab, and another six months for complete healing. Here I am a year later with no pain and full use of my shoulder. Dr. Kumar is knowledgeable, personable, and competent. I sought his expertise for a second opinion on what turned out to be a torn meniscus in my left knee. Surgery was an option for me because I’d already tried physical therapy for months (as assigned by a previous orthopedist from a different practice) without experiencing significant pain relief or return to normal function. During a diagnostic arthroscopy Dr. Kumar found, in addition to the torn meniscus, a cartilage tear in the patella. He successfully repaired those two issues as well as provided a healing catalyst through the injection of bone cement to the tibia which had incurred several stress fractures and swelling due to stress from the torn meniscus. I highly recommend Dr. Kumar as a physician and surgeon and am grateful for his wisdom and attention to detail concerning my case. Dr.kumar did knee surgery on my son who hurt his knee playing basketball. Took the time to explain all the possible options. He fixed my sons meniscus when all the other doctors wanted to cut it out.
