About Dr. Matthias
Dr. Robert Matthias is a distinguished hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgeon. He received his Doctorate from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and a fellowship at the University of Florida.
Since 2011, he has held multiple roles at the University of Florida Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, including Assistant Professor and Fellowship Director. In addition to a stellar professional record, he holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) and American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).
He is passionate about sports medicine, and his writings on football and baseball have been featured in lauded peer-reviewed journals and books. Dr. Matthias’ dedication to ethical medicine and drive to help patients restore their mobility are unwavering.

My first contact was, obviously, with the office staff who welcomed me and got me started on the paperwork (electronically). I was taken back to an examination room by Dr. Matthias' nurse who was very professional and friendly. I next was visited by Dr. Matthias. He is a natural communicator so I immediately felt at ease which facilitated our discussion of the issue. After a few questions he was able to diagnosis my condition and offer me options, one of which was treatment that morning in the office. The entire appointment took less than an hour including new patient paperwork and the procedure. Only time will tell if the treatment option I chose will be effective or if my condition requires surgery. If surgery is required, I feel very comfortable with Dr. Matthias performing the procedure.Patient Submitted Review

This was the first time I seen Dr Matthias. My appointment was at 6:30 PM! His staff was really nice and helpful (This late at night I don’t know if I could be as bright and cheerful as they were!) I do not like hospitals or doctors offices. I feel like there's a lot of waiting and the doctors are rushed. This doctor is nothing like that. Very patient and kind and incredibly knowledgeable. I first saw Dr. Matthias in 2014 for carpal tunnel surgery. He did both my hands and 10 years later, I have had no problems. I am now seeing him for arthritis in my left hand and he was the same with his personality, manners and being concerned for me. I wouldn't go to anyone else but him. The best way I can explain what it's like to be a patient of Dr. Matthias is that you get all the expertise and skill a person would expect from a specialist but with the added, and unexpected, bonus of the warmth and patience I would typically only expect from a family physician. It was clear within the first few minutes of our appt. with Dr. Matthias that he is incredibly knowledgeable and skilled but it was unquestionably his genuine and engaging demeanor that was most immediately healing for my daughter. She was in a lot of pain and wrestling with the feelings of disappointment that come along with missing out on sports and other activities due to a broken bone. Dr. Matthias was able to expertly lift her spirits as well as lay out her treatment plan in such a way that she understood the importance of being patient with her body while it healed. He was, of course, equally wonderful at our follow up appointment. I went to see Dr. Matthias for my daughter’s hand surgery . I was very nervious at first since this is the first time my daughter was having surgery however we felt so relieved after talking to him , he answered all of my questions , showed care , compasion and empathy and asured me he would do the best for my daughter as he does for all of his patients. Dr. Matthias is a very compassionate doctor. He explained everything to me and my wife in detail and answered all our questions. He is not in a hurry to get out of the door. Dr. Robert Matthias is amazing. I honestly thought my thumb, hand and wrist would never work again but he fixed them. Daughter - 7 went in for her first broken bone (wrist) and he was absolutely amazing the way he worked and talked with her while he had to set her wrist back into place and cast it. He was also great at giving my husband and I information we needed to feel comfortable with the situation. Couldn't not of asked for a better experience.Read more

I’ve been seeing Dr Matthias for a few years, had thumb surgery two years ago and it was very successful. He’s the only orthopedic doctor I want to see when it comes to having my other arthritis thumb repaired.
