Doctor Profile: Thomas Bernasek, MD

Dr. Bernasek: I am Thomas Bernasek. I’m an orthopedic surgeon and I specialize in adult reconstruction, which is the specialty in which we take care of the arthritis of the hip and knee. I practice at Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, Florida. I’ve been an orthopedic surgeon now for 25 years, I can barely imagine. Since I am a hip and knee specialist, I have been involved in the development of both hip and knee implants. Orthopedic surgery and joint replacement is just an unbelievable love of mine. It is one of these things that is very mechanical and I like to use my hands in a way. I think we’re the cabinet makers of the orthopedic world and of the medical device world.

I will admit to being a bit of a workaholic. So my fun is really related to the water and I love to fish and dive and so those are things I like to do. I’m a dog person, so I have to find rescue animals and they’re just great animals. Well, I think that many doctors go into a chosen specialty because of their personality type. And I feel fortunate that I selected the right specialty for myself. I will tell you that it is hard to state how gratifying it is. There is no way to make a surgeon feel better than to see a patient do well after we’ve worked on them.
